Mardi Gras was started by a Canadian!

Mardi Gras has the reputation of being one of the wildest celebrations world wide.  The lost inhibitions, intoxicated fun, and 'do anything for a beaded necklace'  reputations is not part of history or tradition.  Lo and behold, this non stop party was started by a Canadian (we're the real party animals!).

In 1699, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville - a Canadian explorer - landed on a plot close to New Orleans and called it "Pointe due Mardi Gras."  In 1702, he also discovered "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" (currently Mobile), and this is where the first Mardi Gras was celebrated in 1703.  Le Moyne later established and developed New Orleans, and by 1730, Mardi Gras was widely celebrated as a society ball.  From then, the traditions evolved with changing governing bodies, and the parades and carnivals were introduced.
